For the last thirteen years, we’ve been blessed to own a piece of property in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. After my father died and we were settling his estate, we had a small amount of money to put toward a down payment on a log house outside of Gatlinburg. Terri and I had prayed for twenty years to be able to one day own a place in the mountains (maybe retiring there at some point), and with a small investment, we bought a little log cabin. Does Preaching Matter? (a word for preachers and pew sitters)
Whether it’s discussed under the subject of worship wars or of what the exact nature of preaching is, this is a good question. Let me just go ahead and state the obvious. I believe preaching matters, not just because I’m a preacher but because the Word of God teaches, endorses, and encourages the proclamation of the gospel. Continue reading “Does Preaching Matter? The Greatest Tree in History
The other day I randomly pulled a book off the shelf in my study at home. It wasn’t a spiritual book. It was Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader: History’s Lists by the Bathroom Reader’s Institute. Believe it or not, the books in this series can make great illustration material. Continue reading “The Greatest Tree in History”
I Don’t Think So
Through the years, archeologists and even the Catholic Church have discovered “relics” from the time of Christ, even dating back to the Old Testament. The most famous find was the Dead Sea Scrolls, which have been recognized as one of the greatest archeological finds in history. Other “finds” are sadly ridiculous. Fireproof Your Life
We recently received word that the audio book version of Fireproof Your Life was nominated for a 2011 Retailers Choice Award. This was produced in partnership with Brilliance Audio.
If you haven’t read Fireproof Your Life, we invite you to read the story of the great sequoia and receive encouragement and inspiration. Through centuries of forest fires, the great sequoia stands unscathed. Michael Catt shows how, like the sequoia, we can stand strong through the fiery trials that inevitably come our way.
Using illustrations from his own life and from the movie, Fireproof, Catt discusses practical issues such as temptation, marriage, and finances, helping us build a faith that resists our corrosive culture. Rather than succumb to pressure of circumstances, we can stand tall and face our challenges in Christ’s power.
